In either macular hole or epiretinal membrane, the arrangement of the photoreceptors recovers partially after hole closure or removal of the epiretinal membrane. However, the macula is deformed as the retinal nerve fibers contract. Final topographic characteristics of the macula are similar after ILM removal regardless of the primary disease. The deformed macula may cause postoperative metamorphopsia, which would thus be iatrogenic.
